Upcoming workshop - Hydrogen in Power Plants
30/08/12 17:00
We are pleased to announce an upcoming workshop being conducted by MVS Engineering and Proton OnSite (USA), under the aegis of Hydrogen Association of India.
The Theme of the workshop is "Taking India Forward" and the workshop aims to address how Indian power plants can benefit from "Investing less on Hydrogen Facility and achieving better efficiency and safety".
Currently, majority of the Hydrogen cooled Turbine Generators in the Indian power plants get their Hydrogen through cylinders. In many cases, these Hydrogen cylinders are procured from external vendors and increasingly power plants are setting up on-site Hydrogen plants and filling the cylinders on-site. The fundamental question we ask and want to debate in the workshop is "Why fill cylinders and move them around? Why not simplify and deliver Hydrogen through fixed pipelines?". Read More...

02/05/12 17:28
Hydrogen today plays a very important role in various industrial applications. Purity of hydrogen, reliability of supply and ease of use are primary considerations when it comes to choosing among the various options of supply.
In the past the hydrogen gas plants were considered to be an asset of those who have the technical expertise to operate and maintain the plant. A number of statutory guidelines to be followed and required licenses made Hydrogen plants less attractive to the user and thus made the cylinder usage popular. This continues to be case in India, wherein many customers remain skeptical about installing their own On-site Hydrogen plant. Read More...

Hydrogen Fuel Cells Backup Power for Telecom Towers - India progresses
14/03/12 08:32
The Hydrogen economy in India is undoubtedly progressing and it is progressing fast! In a recent advance, forward thinking Executives at one of India's largest corporate house - Aditya Birla Group, through their telecom business - Idea Cellular have taken the step towards implementation of Fuel Cells for Backup power. Cliches aside, Idea Cellular has made Hydrogen, "What an Idea!".
Idea Cellular recently announced procuring and deploying Hydrogen Fuel Cells from one of world's largest and established Fuel Cell manufacturer - Ballard Systems. Besides taking this major step forward, what is truly inspiring is the how Idea Cellular has attempted to resolve the achilles heel of Hydrogen powered systems - the Hydrogen supply chain. Aditya Birla group owns a large Caustic Soda plant in Nagda, M.P. This plant, like most other chlor-alkali plants have an abundance of "waste/by-product" Hydrogen which is either sold in the market at very low rates or simply flared or burnt in the boiler. Hence, Idea Cellular decided to tap into this company's resource and solve the dilemma of regular supply of Hydrogen and that too at compelling prices.
Well, we at MVS Engineering got thinking about this. Several facts came to fore in our brainstorming:
1) What is the cost of the Fuel Cell and what will be total cost of ownership (TCO) of the Fuel Cell alone?
2) What is the internal transfer pricing of Hydrogen that Aditya Birla Group is giving to Idea Cellular?
3) What is the radius around Nagda, where this price of Hydrogen can be sustained? Alternatively, when you factor in the cost of transportation of Hydrogen cylinders, until what distance can the Hydrogen be delivered at reasonable cost from the supply source?
4) What are the competition/challenges/threats to this business model?
5) What about the Hydrogen business model where cheap Hydrogen is not available? Does it make sense to produce your own Hydrogen?

14/02/12 13:00
Amazing! Exciting! A giant leap Forward!
This in essence captures our viewpoint on Hydrogen development in India. We are excited to see that finally "Hydrogen Fueled Vehicles" in India is getting to the point where it is moving beyond just labs and theoretical discussions.
Recently, Times of India published an article that speaks about New Delhi Autorickshaws powered by Hydrogen fueled Internal Combustion Engines. This is a innovative in that it breaks out from the traditional mold of Fuel Cell driven vehicles. However, based on our current analysis of cost of production of Hydrogen in the short term and lack of infrastructure for supply of Hydrogen will be major impediments to growth of this particular technology. Nevertheless, this is a step in the right direction and we are excited about the future here in India. Read More...

Increasing Generator Efficiency And Capacity: A CASE STUDY by Proton OnSite
06/12/11 09:15
The purity of hydrogen used within electric power generators has a direct affect on cooling efficiency, windage friction losses, generating capacity and generator longevity. Hydrogen’s high thermal conductivity is the primary reason it is used as the cooling media in a generator instead of air. Hydrogen has a thermal conductivity of nearly seven times that of air, and its ability to transfer heat through forced convection is about 50% better than air. Maintaining hydrogen’s high thermal conductivity through purity monitoring and continuous improvement is important to the overall operation of hydrogen cooled electric generators. Continuous hydrogen replenishment has been proven to be an effective technique in maintaining purity within hydrogen cooled electric generators.

India suffers from expensive and inefficient Hydrogen facility planning of Thermal Power plants
22/11/11 06:00
Hydrogen, the lightest, highest energy content and most combustible gas must be treated with caution. Past 60 years, our engineers and plant owners have had to contend with old technology plants using corrosive Caustic lye, and for umpteen reasons, difficult to control for safety, plant engineering.
With such profound and dangerous experience, with great aplomb, and concern for safety, our best in engineering planners have constructed Hydrogen plant at a remote place within the Thermal plant site. The sound logic being, that if this plant has an accident, the main plant and its personnel shall be safe. Having located the Hydrogen plant in a remote zone, made necessary further investments in Hydrogen compressors, Hydrogen cylinders, and cylinder filling facilities.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging - A growing need for the Indian Food Industry
01/09/11 11:23
Packaged food industry is rapidly growing in India. Over the last 10 years, there has been a mushrooming growth of companies with a very regional focus. However, this is still a largely unorganized sector and concepts of robust supply chain and distribution chain haven't truly pervaded the mindsets of budding entrepreneurs.
However, as many start-up companies reach a stable point in their business, they start to investigate ways and means to differentiate themselves in the market by having a fresher product and fewer returns from the shelves. Additionally, ability to increase the shelf life of the product directly impacts the bottom line of these companies.
In this educational article, we look at a technique called MODIFIED ATMOSPHERE PACKAGING (MAP) which uses Nitrogen for packaging and how it works. Read More...

How markets determine the price of Hydrogen
12/08/11 13:00
Hydrogen price to the customer is dependent on several factors such as demand and supply and also transportation cost. However, at a bare minimum, the fundamental cost of Hydrogen production is typically the largest contributor for determination of price to the customer. We look at these various elements in detail below.
- Equating with the price of Fossil Oil / Gas Fuel, freely available at the point of use. This is the least possible sales price, even from the point of view of any Hydrogen gas supplier.
- Transport and logistics cost of delivering Hydrogen to the point of use.
- Demand supply situation in and around the point of use of Hydrogen gas
- Competition from Hydrogen gas delivered by any other competing technology
Need to introduce high pressure bullet vessels for delivered Hydrogen

Nitrogen Gas is a viable and cost effective option in Pharmaceuticals Industries
29/07/11 12:00
Due to effect of its end product on human health and environment, pharmaceutical industries process their products with very precision and utmost care. Even a very minor ignorance can lead to a hazard. The pharmaceutical needs to be very precise about its product from its manufacturing to packaging and transportation. Oxygen in the atmospheric air reacts with the processing chemicals, leads to change in chemical composition of the drug manufactured which would become a threat to human life and will adversely affect the reputation of concerned manufacturing unit in terms of brand and turn over both.
