Nitrogen a colorless, odorless gas, is a non-hydrocarbon inert gas used for a variety of functions in the drilling, work over and completion phases of oil and gas wells as safety is a top priority in the oil and gas industry. Nitrogen ensures safety during tank cleaning operations and other situations where an inert atmosphere is needed.
Because nitrogen is immiscible (or does not mix) with oil and water, a nitrogen injection program or nitrogen flood using a MVS On-Site Nitrogen Generator can be used to purge out the hydrocarbons from an injection well to a production well.
Nitrogen is used immensely in the Oil & Gas Sector, mainly for the purpose of pigging, purging and blanketing of pipelines and oil tanks and also to inert the atmosphere of hydrocarbon vessels and pipelines. In other words, it is used to limit the oxygen content so that it cannot react with the hydrocarbons and make an explosive mixture.
Nitrogen is used in the process called pigging of a pipeline. For example, pressurised nitrogen is used as the driving force to push the pigs through the pipe. It can also be used to purge the pipeline after pigging has been completed. In this case, the dry gas is run through the line without the pig to dry up any remaining water in the pipeline.
Nitrogen purging means to inert the atmosphere of hydrocarbon vessels and oil lines. In other words to limit the oxygen contents so that it cannot react with the hydrocarbons and make some explosive mixtures.
When it comes to Oil & Gas Industry Terms, purging process is carried out in various application. Generally for gas well activation, line clearing, pigging or pressure transferring, also to reduce oxygen content in the pipeline, Nitrogen is circulated at high pressure at 80-100 Kg/cm2 from one end called as annulus (casing) and returns of gases are taken out at the other end.
The Nitrogen purging job brings down chances of explosion / explosive mixtures.
In a process called tank blanketing, nitrogen is applied to an empty storage facility, to increase safety and provide a buffer for the entering hydrocarbons. Blanketing with nitrogen is safe and dependable in maintaining a constant protective layer of gas on top of a work substance. Humid air in the head space is replaced by high-purity, inert, and totally dry nitrogen. A precise valve-control system ensures that as the tank is filled or emptied, the nitrogen content automatically adjusts to maintain the protective blanket.
In summary, Nitrogen plays an important role in the Oil Exploration industry, and brings down chances of explosion / explosive mixtures.
