Nitrogen Gas is being increasingly used in the processed food industry and specially for packaging purposes.

We explore the benefits of Nitrogen gas for Snack food packaging application.

Shelf life of snack foods like Potato chips, extruded snacks, Breakfast cereals, Nuts and other dry fruits can be improved by expulsion of the air surrounding the food in the package. This is also the case of foods such as Rice, Milk Powder etc. The simplest and the most cost effective way of expulsion of air at the point of packaging is to replace it by Nitrogen gas. Nitrogen is an inert gas which does not react nor harm the food products in any way.

This technique being employed in the packaged food industry is commonly known as Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP). MAP is a technique which helps maintain product freshness, crispiness and extends the shelf life by replacing air by Nitrogen gas which in turn prevents bacteria growth.

Nitrogen is Low cost, clean and dry inert gas and being used all over the world for food products packaging application. It is also used as a filler gas to create a pressurized atmosphere that prevents package collapse in handling and transportation.

The benefits and low cost of using Nitrogen gas in the packaged food industry far outweighs the risks and product spoilage costs associated with not having Nitrogen.
