PSA Nitrogen versus Cryogenic Plants

We have prepared a useful summary sheet to help customers make an informed decision whether to invest in a PSA Nitrogen plant or a cryogenic plant.

1)Investment cost of Cryogenic Nitrogen plant is very high. Typically, it is more than double that of an equivalent PSA plant.Investment cost in PSA Nitrogen generator is comparatively lower. Cost of a PSA plant is typically less than half of that of an equivalent cryogenic plant.
2)Cryogenic plant takes around 12 to 16 hours for start-up. Therefore, Cryogenic Nitrogen plant can not be switched ON & switched OFF very frequently.PSA Nitrogen generator?s start-up time is only 5-minutes and therefore, depending on Nitrogen demand, this Nitrogen generator can be switched ON & switched OFF very conveniently.
3)Cryogenic Nitrogen Plant is very large equipment requiring lot of sophisticated controls and maintenance cost is high. Also dedicated man-power is needed to monitor and operation of Cryogenic Nitrogen plant.PSA Nitrogen generator is very simple & does not need even an operator. It keeps working round the clock without any supervision.
4)In Cryogenic Nitrogen generator, running cost is Rs. 5/- per cubic meter due to more electrical power consumption.For 99.9% Nitrogen purity generation, running cost is only around Rs. 3/- per cubic meter.
5)Cryogenic plant requires a very large size building & bigger footprint size.Comparatively PSA Nitrogen generator is very compact size unit.
6)Cryogenic Nitrogen is to be stored in a vacuum insulated double walled Tank. Cost of this Storage tank is very high.PSA Nitrogen gas can be stored in a very simple low cost Nitrogen tank.

  1. A skid mounted nitrogen plant(using PSA system) produces nitrogen at a purity of 99.99% (less than 100 ppm of oxygen)using oxygen analyser (Ntron 7100). But we obtain 98.4% by laboratory analysis using Gas chromatography.
    Kindly explain why the difference in purity.

    1. The oxygen analyser will provide an accurate reading of oxygen present in the nitrogen stream coming from the PSA system. However, when measuring the nitrogen gas stream in a gas chromatograph Oxygen cannot be analysed with the packed columns available in the laboratory because it can’t be separated from argon on these columns. Hence, the nitrogen purity will read lower, as the impurity reading will not only have oxygen but also argon. Argon is also an inert gas and in fact a more desirable gas for many processes. In our experience, most processes where nitrogen is used are not affected by argon presence, only oxygen. Hence, if your impurity concern in gas is only oxygen, then you can depend upon the analyser reading.
