Hydrogen Generator started up in Nepal for weather balloon filling

We are proud to announce startup of Hydrogen generator for weather balloon filling application in Nepal.

Hydrogen gas is used for filling up weather balloons, as it is inexpensive and easy to produce (when using water as the feed/fuel). Hydrogen is a very light-weight gas and hence works very well for lifting the weather balloons to altitudes required for this application.

MVS Engineering successfully secured contract for supply of Hydrogen generator and accessories from our esteemed customer in 2017. The hydrogen generator was supplied in line with the terms and conditions of the contract. Customer felt that it would be easier for them to have a stand-alone weather proof installation of the generator and hence they reached out to MVS to come up with a cost-effective and robust solution.

MVS Engineering technical team immediately got to the drawing board and drew up a solution for providing an insulated container which would serve not only as the room for housing the hydrogen generator, but also work as an air-conditioned office where the weather department staff could easily work. MVS Engineering has over a decade’s experience in providing dozens of containerized gas generation systems for our Nitrogen gas plants and also medical oxygen generators supplied to Africa few years ago.

Customer, pleased with our design and appreciating our track record for containerized gas plants, gave us the order for supplying the container for hydrogen gas plant.

The hydrogen gas generator supplied by MVS is model S-20 from our Principals – Proton OnSite (NEL Hydrogen). Proton OnSite of USA is the world’s largest and most established manufacturer of safe, reliable, compact and easy to operate Hydrogen generators utilizing Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology. MVS has already supplied 40+ Proton systems in India and are proud to undertake supply and installation in Nepal.

The hydrogen gas plant uses Water electrolysis technology for disassociating Hydrogen from Oxygen and uses electric power to achieve this split in the presence of a catalyst. In case of Proton OnSite gas generators, the catalyst is the proton exchange membrane which not only acts as the catalyst, but also as the separation between the disassociated hydrogen and oxygen. The gas generators deliver hydrogen at a pressure of around 14 to 15 bar(g) which is more than sufficient for most processes and for storage purposes if the customer requires some amount of stored hydrogen gas.

“Considering the size of the gas generator, very infrequent maintenance requirements, quality of hydrogen gas delivered from the Proton hydrogen generator, no other manufacturer’s hydrogen generator comes close to the value to benefit proposition of a Proton hydrogen system. These systems are CE-certified and manufactured to the highest standards possible.” states our sales director – Mr. Siddharth Rastogi, who directly handles Proton OnSite sales in the region.
