Hydrogen Workshop for Power Sector – An astounding success

The workshop held today at India Habitat Center – “Taking India Forward – Investing less on Hydrogen Facility and achieving better efficiency and safety” was an astounding success.

With the blessings of the Hydrogen Association of India, this workshop was organized by MVS Engineering Limited and Proton OnSite (USA). The event was attended by nearly 75 professionals from several renowned organizations, including:

  • NTPC
  • BHEL
  • India Oil
  • Alstom Bharat Forge
  • Toshiba JSW
  • Jindal Power
  • Reliance Infrastructure
  • Lahmeyer International
  • Desein Indure
  • Moser Baer
  • Lanco Infrastructure
  • Tractebel Engineering

and many more…

The workshop was broken into three parts, namely:

1) Hydrogen in the Indian Power sector

This paper was presented by Sh. Rajeev Bhalla of MVS Engineering. He presented very insightful details about the cost of production of Hydrogen and how Indian utilities need to be concerned with several aspects of Hydrogen in the TG such as pressure, purity and dew point. In addition, he presented some hard numbers on what a typical Hydrogen Generation facility with conventional technologies costs and how this investment can be reduced to less than half if the industry starts to adopt some of the proven practices of many utilities the world over.

2) International patterns of Hydrogen delivery in the Power sector

Dovetailing with Sh. Bhalla’s presentation, Mr. Thomas (Tom) Skoczylas of Proton OnSite, presented his paper covering the technological advances made in Hydrogen Generation using Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology. He elaborated the safety, reliability details incorporated in Proton’s Hydrogen Generators and how this safe delivery of Hydrogen allows the power utilities to deliver Hydrogen directly to the TG. He shared numerous examples of power utilities across USA, Europe, Middle East, Egypt that are now using Proton’s Hydrogen Generators to deliver Hydrogen. The highlight of Mr. Skoczylas’ paper was the various permutations one can think about when attempting to reduce investment costs at the Power plant’s Hydrogen Generation facility.

3) Panel Debate – How we can take India forward

Along with Sh. Bhalla and Mr. Skoczylas, the Head of Business Development at BOC – Sh. Vivek Bhatnagar, joined the panel debate. Various aspects of Hydrogen were discussed, ranging from safety of Hydrogen handling to the state of the Indian Hydrogen economy. Some key ideas and thought provoking discussions ensued and the key take-away from the panel debate was that if we think out of the box, there are some very innovative ways for the Indian Power sector in which they can stand to benefit from lower capex, lower opex and much superior safety and plant operational reliability.
