Inert Gas Generator for Ships
Shipping lines are increasingly installing Inert Gas Generation systems on board as the cost of these systems is very reasonable and the benefits far outweigh the risks of not having one.
The origin of today’s Inert Gas Systems on ships and oil tankers can be traced back to a number of fire accidents around 20-25 year back. Investigations concluded that the only safe way to prevent these accidents is to remove Oxygen from the flammable gas mixture evaporating from cargo tank holds and pipelines. The tanks and pipelines need to be purged and blanketed with Inert Gas. Following the purging process, Oxygen level is diluted to such a low level that the small quantity of remnant Oxygen cannot support combustion.
Nitrogen being inert in nature has been used extensively and successfully world over for similar application of purging, inertization and blanketing. MVS Engineering is a leading manufacturer of Inert Gas Generators based on Molecular Sieves PSA technology licensed from Germany. These compact, skid mounted generators produce high purity Nitrogen Gas from atmospheric air (No fuel is required as was the case with older technologies).
