Why Dry Air is important

Ever wonder that compressed air could be the culprit for frequent pneumatic machine breakdowns, sub-optimal quality of your product and other inherent process workflow problems. Understanding Dew Point

Dew point is the measure of moisture in air. It is the temperature at which moisture present in the air, starts condensing. Lower the dew point, more dry is the air.

Air of (-)40?C Dew Point means no moisture would condense unless temperature of the compressed air is reduced less than (-)40?C.

Characteristics of Compressed Air

Air from compressor has excessive moisture and contaminants. When compressed to 7 kg/cm2g, the temperature of discharge air reaches 140?C. Since atmospheric air always contains some moisture, it will enter the compressor and the concentration of this moisture will be increased by a ratio of 8:1 at 7 kg/cm2g.

For instance, when the compressor takes in 100 NM3/hr of ambient air at 40?C and 50% relative humidity, at 7 kg/cm2g after the cooler will condense an average of 30 litres of water in 24 hours.

Additionally, today?s high performance compressor lubricants also cause additional problems, and need to be removed before they cause irreversible damage. They will cause valve and gasket materials to fail, and wreak havoc on processing equipment and instruments.

Consequences of Moisture-rich Compressed Air

Compressed air is used in industries in pneumatic tools, pneumatic instruments, pneumatic machines and in a variety of production processes. The consequences of using un-dried air are:

– Rust and scale deposits in steel pipes

– Increased resistance in flow

– Malfunctioning of process control instruments

– Corrosion and damage to electromagnetic valves and pneumatic system

– Peeling and blistering effect on spray painted surfaces

– Higher energy cost

Net result of these ill-effects is the adverse affect on quality of product and resulting higher maintenance costs.
