Membrane Nitrogen Generator – How It Works

For years, industries have been used cylinders to meet the nitrogen need for their industrial process. However, with developing technology, industries are now moving towards installing on-site generators rather than using cylinders. Why? Simply because on-site generators offer numerous benefits over cylinders.

How many types of Nitrogen generators are there?
Nitrogen Generators are based on two technologies.

  • 1. Pressure Swing Adsorption
  • 2. Membrane Technology

How do Membrane Nitrogen Generators work?

Nitrogen generators do not create nitrogen; instead, they use nitrogen present in the air and concentrate it by removing extra molecules.

The ambient air composition is 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and carbon dioxide, argon and water. The membrane separation process utilizes the diffusion principle for the separation of faster-moving gases from slower ones. As a result, nitrogen gas is delivered as the product gas.

MVS Engineering uses Air Liquide’s membrane technology that has asymmetric hollow fibres comprised of a core optimized for mechanical strength, and for gas separation, the sheath is optimized. A 12-inch module that stretches around 750 miles contains 0.5 to 1.0 million fibers.

Membrane modules may contain over 1 million individual hollow fibres formed in cross flow and counter flow designs, allowing for flexibility in meeting all pressure drop and performance constraints. Bundles are designed with high-performance fibres to enable operations at elevated temperatures and extreme pressures. This allows for higher membrane productivity, fewer membranes and lower system CAPEX.

Optimum Nitrogen production from membranes is a complex calculation that depends on a variety of factors, including feed air temperature, pressure drop across the membrane, and the volumetric flow of feed air and desired purity at the outlet. MVS engineered solutions do this study for our customers and propose an efficient and optimized system for on-site Nitrogen production.

Why choose membrane nitrogen generators?

Some essential factors in choosing membrane nitrogen generators are:

  • Membrane generators have simpler working principles.
  • It has lower maintenance costs.
  • Smaller footprints of installation.
  • Membrane nitrogen generators start up faster and are quieter
