Working procedure of a MVS Engineering nitrogen generator

Since the atmosphere is full of different types of gases, it is difficult to separate nitrogen in a pure state. A PSA nitrogen generator uses vessels filled with alumina and carbon molecular sieves to separate pure nitrogen from air. In a membrane nitrogen generator, the separation of nitrogen from air is carried out through fibrous membranes.

PSA nitrogen generator is built by MV Engineering in collaboration with CarboTech, a German gas generator manufacturing company. Pressure Swing Adsorption technology is adopted to extract pure nitrogen from air. When compressed and cooled air passes through PSA units or vessels filled with carbon molecular sieves and activated alumina, oxygen is absorbed there. Then nitrogen is further purified and dried by passing through a N2 surge vessel and dryer. Absorbed oxygen is later released back into the atmosphere. When carbon molecular sieves of one vessel get saturated with oxygen, nitrogen production is automatically shifted to another vessel.

Air Liquide’s membrane technology is applied in manufacturing this nitrogen generator, making it exclusive despite the presence of all nitrogen manufacturing companies. Hollow polymeric fibers are used to build membranes. The core of these fibers provides the required mechanical strength while the sheath is optimized to separate the diffused gases. A module membrane of 12 inches dimension contains 0.5 – 1 million fibers. Some generators may contain more than 1 million fibers in a module, which is designed to allow cross flow and counter flow of gases. The productivity of the generator increases with the increase in the number of membranes. The fibrous membranes of this generator are highly durable due to the application of American MEDAL technology.

The flow range of nitrogen is 1 Nm3/hr to 1500 Nm3/hr in a PSA nitrogen generator. In a membrane nitrogen generator, flow range varies from 1 Nm3/hr to 5000 Nm3/hr. The purity of nitrogen is between 95% and 99.999% when produced by a PSA nitrogen generator while nitrogen produced by a membrane nitrogen generator is 95% – 99.5% pure.
