The Use of Nitrogen for Pressure Testing Safely In Industries

Pressure testing is important to check the capacity of pipelines and detect any leakage before delivering to customers. Since nitrogen is an inert gas, it can be safely used for pressure testing procedures. However, extra caution is needed to avoid accidents while conducting this operation with a nitrogen cylinder.

The asphyxiation property of nitrogen and the exerted high pressure can cause suffocation to users. So, MVS Engineering Pvt. Ltd has introduced an onsite gas generator to produce nitrogen for pressure testing.

The functioning procedure of the nitrogen generator for pressure testing:

MVS Engineering has successfully applied Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology in a nitrogen generator. It helps in extracting the 78% nitrogen present in atmospheric air just by absorbing all other gases. It needs two large vessels that are filled with carbon molecular sieves and activated alumina.

The surrounding air is compressed and dried before passing through a vessel. Pure nitrogen comes out of this vessel, leaving oxygen and other gases trapped in the molecular sieves.

When a vessel is fully saturated with oxygen, the production is automatically switched to the second vessel. This trapped gas is then released back into the atmosphere by lifting the exerted pressure from this first vessel. In this way, the production is alternated between these two vessels with the help of an automatic valve. Thus, the production of nitrogen for pressure testing can be a continuous process.

The flow range of the nitrogen is 1 Nm3/hr to 1500 Nm3/hr when coming out of the generator. The delivery pressure of nitrogen is 5 bars while transferring to pipelines for pressure testing, which can be increased by adding a booster. The purity of produced nitrogen is 98 – 99.99%, which makes it most reliable for required functions.
