What is the working principle of a PSA nitrogen generator?
A PSA nitrogen generator works on the principle of Pressure Swing Adsorption technology, which can easily separate nitrogen from oxygen and other gases present in the atmospheric air. Two large vessels are packed with carbon molecular sieves and activated alumina. Air is compressed and cooled before passing through one of these vessels. Nitrogen is separated by the molecular sieves of the vessel, which absorb oxygen. Pure nitrogen gas comes out through the exhaust vent, and it is collected in a tank.
When molecular sieves of a vessel become saturated with oxygen, the nitrogen production is automatically switched to the second vessel. The saturated sieves are depressurized to release oxygen back into the atmosphere. Nitrogen is dried by passing through a dryer before being sent for industrial use via pipelines.
