The Importance of GOBARdhan Scheme of the Indian Government in Biogas Production

The use of renewable energy and sustainable waste management are prime concerns of the Indian government. So, the government launched the GOBARdhan scheme in 2018 under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) to reduce the use of fossil fuels. The term “GOBARdhan” stands for “Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan”. This scheme deals with the conversion of waste products into biogas. The production of compressed biogas (CBG) is targeted to increase almost ten-fold during the next decade in this scheme. The Union Cabinet approved Rs 23,731 crore in August 2026 to implement this scheme on a large scale across India.

What Is the GOBARdhan Scheme?

The GOBARdhan scheme follows a circular economic approach by treating organic waste as a valuable resource for the production of renewable energy. Various biodegradable materials, like cow dung, agricultural residues, and waste food, will be processed through anaerobic digestion by microorganisms to produce biogas. Nutrient-rich bio-slurry is obtained as a by-product of the biogas production process. The broader GOBARdhan initiative is coordinated by the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

According to Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase II, financial assistance of up to Rs 50 Lakhs is available for setting up community and cluster-based biogas plants in each district during this scheme’s duration.

How Does GOBARdhan Scheme Support Biogas Production?

Biogas production is the sole aim of the GOBARdhan scheme. MVS Engineering offers CBG production plants for large biogas production projects. Biogas is produced from organic waste and purified to convert into compressed biogas, which can be used to replace traditional fuels. CBG is now preferred for cooking, heating, and power generation.

According to this government initiative, organic waste will be collected and converted into renewable energy. The GOBARdhan portal is the best platform for registering CBG production plants or biogas plants. It aims to create an organized ecosystem by eliminating waste materials and reducing the carbon footprint.

Prime Advantages of GOBARdhan Scheme for Biogas Plants

The GOBARdhan scheme offers the following economic and environmental benefits –

  • Effective waste management – Various types of organic biodegradable waste, like animal manure, agricultural residues, and waste food products, can be converted into biogas, instead of burning or dumping these waste materials.
  • Renewable energy generation – Biogas is the best local source of clean energy in India. It helps in reducing the dependence on fossil fuels, which is helpful for conservation of these fuel reserves.
  • Organic manure production – The slurry by-product obtained from biogas production can be used as fertilizer in agricultural production. Thus, farmers can reduce the use of chemical fertilizers now, which are often harmful for human health and the surrounding environment.
  • Rural employment – Large biogas production projects can create opportunities for employing many people in rural areas. People are needed for waste collection, operation, and maintenance of biogas plants.
  • Environmental protection – The emissions of greenhouse gases can be reduced to a large extent by controlling waste management and decreasing the use of fossil fuels. Hence, biogas production will gradually lead to a greener and healthier environment.

MVS Engineering Pvt. Ltd will play a vital role by manufacturing the best-quality CBG production plants to ensure the success of the GOBARdhan scheme.
