Oxygen is a highly reactive gas that can easily join other elements to form useful compounds. Though it is abundant in the atmosphere, oxygen is mixed with nitrogen and other gases, making it difficult to use its properties for industrial production. MVS Engineering Pvt. Ltd solved this problem by producing an oxygen generator that can be installed at all production sites. This system uses PSA technology to extract pure oxygen from air.
Differences between industrial and medical oxygen plants
Though the basic operative system of an oxygen plant remains the same, there are a few dissimilarities between a medical oxygen plant and an industrial oxygen plant. Some parameters differ according to the nature of the oxygen’s use. Hence, MVS Engineering customizes oxygen plants according to customers’ requirements, by making necessary changes in the features of every generator.
Purity of oxygen – The purity level of oxygen gas should be very high when used for medical purposes while it can be lower for industrial use. However, MVS Engineering designs the PSA oxygen generator to produce 93% – 96% pure oxygen in all cases. If the purity level drops below 90%, production stops automatically with an alarm, and the supply is shifted to the backup system.
Pressure of oxygen gas – For industrial purposes, the pressure for delivering oxygen gas is maintained at 5 Kg/cm2g. An additional booster can be installed to have higher pressure while supplying oxygen to production sites. On the contrary, the pressure is maintained below 5 bar(g) while supplying via pipelines to patients, due to safety reasons.
The procedure used – MVS Engineering applies PSA or Pressure Swing Adsorption technology for oxygen generators to be used for both industrial and medical purposes. An onsite oxygen generator contains two vessels filled with molecular sieves and activated alumina where compressed air is passed for industrial production of oxygen gas. A medical oxygen generator contains two towers filled with Zeolite, to filter pure oxygen from the compressed air. Both generators are designed to function continuously as the production automatically shifts to another tower when one tower is saturated with absorbed nitrogen.
