Use of Nitrogen Generator in Refrigerant and HVAC industry

Refrigerants are what make air conditioning possible. Contained within the coils of an air conditioner, these liquid agents cool and dehumidify indoor air.

For years, the most common refrigerant used in air-conditioning systems was R-22 (Freon). Today, in response to growing environmental concerns and depleting sources of R-22, production of systems using R-22 refrigerant are being phased out and R-410A is increasingly replacing it as the preferred refrigerant gas.

Availability of R-22 supplies may become short in the coming years. So by choosing an R-410A system now, you can plant ahead with an ozone-friendly solution.

Unlike refrigerants that contain Bromine or chlorine, R-410A does not contain chlorine at all, therefore its ozone depletion potential (ODP) is zero, consequently becoming the most widely used as the preferred refrigerant for use in residential and commercial air conditioners in many countries world over and sold under the trademarked names such as Forane 410A, Puron, EcoFluor R410, Genetron R410A, and AZ-20, is a zeotropic, but near-azeotropic mixture of difluoromethane (CH2F2, called R-32) and pentafluoroethane (CHF2CF3, called R-125), which is used as a refrigerant in air conditioning applications.

Air conditioners working on R-410A operate at much higher pressure than other refrigerants (R-410A operates at pressures 50 to 70% higher than those of R-22). So these require high pressure testing by Nitrogen gas prior to filling of refrigerant, so as to avoid unnecessary venting of refrigerant, systems should be leak checked with pressurized Nitrogen before charging.

Since certain concentrations of R-410A with air can become combustible, it is advisable to never mix R-410A with air or oxygen for either leak testing or pressurizing a system. Hence Nitrogen should be used for leak testing or pressurizing a system.

Only mixtures of nitrogen and R-22 can be used as a leak-test gas (trace gas) in an R-410A system. Also, Nitrogen is a preferred gas used in this process as it will not harm the environment and does not support combustion or oxidation, as does air or oxygen. The R-22-nitrogen leak test gas is not subject to the prohibition on venting because in these cases, the ozone-depleting compound is not used as a refrigerant.

Before nitrogen can be added to R-410A system, the system MUST be evacuated to 0.0 psig. Otherwise, the R-410A-nitrogen-R-22 mixture will be considered a refrigerant, and its release will be a violation of EPA regulations and subject to fine.
